Before I was even born, though, Edie was a frequent guest on the many television programs of Ernie Kovacs. Ernie was, by anyone's measure, the most creative person ever to work in television, and certainly the first to truly understand that it was a visual medium (up until Ernie, television was still "radio with pictures"). It was standard practice in television, at the time, to record over the old shows after they'd aired (tape was very expensive, after all, and who would ever want to see an old television show). But Edie recognized Ernie's genius and the importance of saving whatever she could lay hands on before the studio had it destroyed. Thanks to Edie, we have at least some of Ernie's classic and groundbreaking television preserved for posterity.
Edie married Ernie in 1954. Ernie died in a car crash in 1962. And Edie passed away in 2008. During her lifetime, Edie never released a Christmas album.
As luck would have it, Edie also saved a good deal of audio, pressing acetates from old kinescopes. And so, finally, "The Edie Adams Christmas Album" will be released October 9. The album features all of Edie's surviving holiday recordings from her appearances in the early to mid 50s on the Kovacs Unlimited TV shows. There are even a couple of Ernie and Edie duets! And there will be liner notes from Edie's son, Josh Mills. The album is being issued by Omnivore Records and pre-orders are being taken now.
