Matt's star has been rising in recent years--the result of hard work as much as talent. He's written and recorded fairly prolifically and tours constantly throughout Canada, the UK and France. Earlier this year, Matt won the Solo/Duo crown in the 26th annual International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis Tennessee, beating out competitors from 11 other countries and becoming the first Canadian ever to place first. The IBC has previously featured the likes of Tommy Castro, Susan Tedeschi, Michelle Wilson and Sean Carney, to name but a few.
I don't know what spirit moved Matt to record a Christmas album but, as a fan of both Christmas music and Blues, I can only say "Thank you, Lord." The track list already has me alive with anticipation. From old time spiritual ("Go Tell It On The Mountain") to what looks to be a generous helping of Matt Andersen originals, it promises to be a Blue, Blues Christmas.
Matt Andersen's "Spirit of Christmas" will be released officially near the end of the month, though pre-orders will ship beginning November 17. To reserve your copy, order through Matt's label home, Busted Flat Records. To hear Matt Andersen play the Blues, pay a visit to his MySpace page. Just a few notes of "Devil's Bride" and you'll be sold.
Blues Christmas albums are rare enough. Single artist Blues Christmas albums are all but unheard of. But a Matt Andersen Christmas album? That's bound to be one of a kind.
