The good time poppy post-punk party-band conglomerate Bowling For Soup so enjoyed recording a Christmas song for Phineas & Ferb last year, they decided to make an entire Christmas record, albeit a digital one, and they even left it open ended by including "Volume 1" in the title.
"Merry Flippin' Christmas" is about what you'd expect from Bowling For Soup. It's flippin' awesome, providing you aren't looking for lullabies and sacred hymns. The rockin' starts with a cover of the Kinks' "Father Christmas" and doesn't stop until the band has had it's way with Buck Owens, Mariah Carey, Jose Feliciano, Merle Haggard, and The Ramones. The album closes with a, shall we say, spirited rendition of "We're A Couple of Misfits" from the Rankin-Bass animation "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer." For the record, the record does not include the tune they recorded for Phineas and Ferb, "Winter Vacation", a winter variation of the cartoon's regular theme song "Today Is Gonna Be A Great Day".
Bowling For Soup doesn't vary the tempo much and the sound samples don't sound overly Christmasy, but then that's not what you come to a Bowling For Soup record for. You come to RAWK! And, on that score, Bowling For Soup delivers a perfect strike.
