Stubbys House of Christmas

The folks at Zang Productions have always been especially fond of Christmas.  And they can be counted on to roll out a free download or two every season (with most still available if you're willing to search the archives a little bit).  But I don't know that they've ever tossed out the free holiday cheer so much as they are this year.

First, on the First Day of Christmas, the proprietor of Zang--ol Greybeard himself--along with his wife Selina Blakeney, fired up the festivities with their take on "Gabriel's Message".  (Just a quick aside; scrolling down that page, I found a delightful ditty from late last year that I'd missed--Selina's "A Christmas Tale".  Make sure you pick that one up...or load it down...or whatever it is the kids are saying these days.)

Then, on December 5, Zang rolled out "A Broken Hearted Christmas", literally recorded in an English back alleyway the week before by Benjamin Blower and The Army of the Broken Hearted.  Sure, it's no Beatles rooftop session, but you'll really appreciate this if you've heard the group's brilliant 2010 EP "The Darkness Doesn't Love You Baby, Come Out While You Can".  Even if you haven't, you should get behind this modern folk artist whose original music feature's some of the sharpest and hardest biting lyrics in music--or political activism for that matter.  In a world where honest hard-working people lose everything while the bankers who stole it all walk free, we could use more Benjamin Blowers.   And that's what the Army of the Broken Hearted is all about.  That's my take anyway.

On the eighth Day of Christmas, our true Zang gave to us...Joel The Custodian (because Joel The Janitor was taken?) and his video rap retelling of the story of the Magi, "The Visitors".  The vid is an entry in a contest called The Nativity Factor.  So, if you like it, you should definitely go vote for it.

And just Saturday, we got yet another free 3 song Christmas EP, this one from Indie Pop Rock group Florent.  Technically, "Christmas Songs" is due Monday, so it wasn't on the Zang site at the time of this writing.  Instead, it turned up on Never Enough Notes.  This one was even better than the rest, sporting a kind of simplicity rare in today's over produced market place.  And, sure, I'm just echoing what Alice Sutherland-Hawes had to say, but it's true.    You'll love the garage jazz pop sound of "White Christmas"--false start and all--I just know it.  And, if you want to rock a little bit harder, take "Carol Of The Bells" for a spin.  And, if I'm wrong and this isn't your cup of tea, I'm sure they'll refund your purchase price.  Oh, that's right.  It's free!  "Christmas Songs" is Florent's debut.  Let's hope we hear more from them.  Lot's more.

Is Zang finished with Christmas for 2011?  Or is there still more holiday cheer to come?  You'll just have to stay tuned.  Same Zang time, same Zang channel.
