Aoi Teshima is a singer and actress, frequently featured in both roles in Japanese Anime. Aoi, on this album at least, sounds a bit like a Japanese Enya. And it's possible that's her thing. She sings her "Christmas Songs" entirely in English. Every song is sung in a slow tempo and her voice never rises above a whisper. This is most effective on the songs that are ballads by nature, but it doesn't sound bad on a song like "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", one we're so used to hearing with a faster beat. Aoi proves her talents by singing "Silent Night" a cappella, providing (it appears) her own harmony vocals. I could definitely see others liking this much more than I did--folks partial to the Claudine Longet style of singing, say, or those who wish Enya's songs were just a tad less ethereal. Personally, I like my J-Pop a little poppier. Best tracks here, in my view, are "The Beautiful Day", "Silent Night" and "The Christmas Song". Song samples at Amazon (JP).
